Linus Torvalds once said, referring to the development of Linux, that he "had been flown on the shoulder of giants." Among those giant, Dennis Ritchie (dmr) is the highest possible. Ritchie, creator of the c programming language and developed the Unix operating system technology died on October 8 at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy that cast a shadow, long time.
Dennis Ritchie received the National Medal of Technology from President Bill Clinton in 1999
By making the C, Ritchie gave birth to the concept of open systems. C was developed so that they can port Unix to computers, and so that programs written on one platform (and the skills used to develop them) can be easily transferred to another.
