While MySQL has been a success not eligible, there is always a whisper and regret of those who want to use open source database in mission critical situations. If you need 9 five types of availability and features other great companies, MySQL is not possible yet to scale for you. But of course if You have Your Oracle and MySQL, it's not too big a problem because if MySQL is not enough companies, they have other databases they can sell You would be the largest scale of the work. Now a company called SchoonerSQL wanted to give a version of MySQL scale out.
While SchoonerSQL is not open sourced, owes much of its existence to the fact that MySQL is open source. They have a commercial license from Oracle to sell their version of MySQL with the addition of a Schooner. But because of the commercial version of MySQL is based on the open source version, Schooner has access to the source code that enables them to make modifications and improvements they have made. If they start with closed-source databases, chances are the commercial license they would not give them access to the source code to make this change.
What changes they have made? Well according to Jerry Rudisin, CEO of Schooner that I spoke with the other day, the Schooner took this to the standard MySQL:
All this adds up to five 9s of availability on the MySQL platform is familiar. The schooner is also promising Compatibility 100% with MySQL as well.
Of course one has to wonder about Oracle's feelings in all this. If you are using MySQL and want a more scalable database with enterprise features, Oracle just might have something to sell you. But Rudisin says that Oracle to date have been picture perfect partners, supports the Schooner and be cooperative in every way possible. Personally, I think Oracle will support until they feel that they lost more money by not raising Schooner customers to Oracle than MySQL license they made selling through the Schooner.
